Jeremy Magland is a Data Scientist in the Center for Computational Mathematics at the Flatiron Institute, which he joined in 2015. His work focuses on developing computational methods and open-source software for analyzing, visualizing, and sharing large-scale scientific data.
He has developed algorithms for clustering and spike sorting — including the MountainSort spike sorter — and contributed to community tools for electrophysiology such as SpikeForest and SpikeInterface. His current work concentrates on reproducible, cloud-friendly tools that make complex datasets easier to explore and reuse, including Neurosift for browser-based exploration of the DANDI Archive and other neurophysiology repositories and figpack for portable interactive visualizations. Recent projects include numbl, a MATLAB-compatible computing environment that runs in the browser and on the command line, and mip, a package manager for MATLAB. He has also explored applications of large language models to scientific data analysis, including assistants and automated notebook generators for the DANDI Archive.
Before joining the foundation, Magland was a research associate professor of radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked on mathematical modeling, image reconstruction, and data processing for magnetic resonance imaging, including pulse sequence design and quantitative imaging of bone and vasculature.
He holds a B.S. and M.S. in mathematics from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.
